What a great meeting March 12 for the Wetumpka Rotary Club!

On January 19th, 2019 a significant portion of downtown Wetumpka was destroyed by tornadic activity. Fortunately, there were no lives lost, but the property damage was severe and extensive, including the destruction of a 150 year-old church, many homes and the Wetumpka Police Fleet.

Since that day, many Rotarians have pitched in to begin the long process of rebuilding. There were many clubs, both inside and outside of our District 6880 that have provided financial support. One of the leaders in this effort is the Shades Valley Rotary Club in our sister district, 6860, to the north.

Upon hearing of the destruction in Wetumpka, members of the Shades Valley Rotary Club discussed what they could do to help. Their board of directors met and by unanimous consent agreed to contribute a substantial amount to assist in Wetumpka’s recovery.

6860 District Governor Carol Argo joined Shades Valley Club President Dennis Devane and Major Donor Ted Brasfield to surprise Past Wetumpka Club President Eric Hyde with a check for over $10,000 to the Wetumpka Rotary Club!

Wetumpka Rotary has already elected the recipient as being the Boy Scout troops in the area that lost a meeting place, vans, and equipment as a result of the storm. This selection had special meaning to Ted because he is an Eagle Scout. One of the Boy Scouts present for the ceremony happened to be the son of Club President Elect Vanessa Royal.

Wetumpka Club President Leisa Finley made some heartfelt remarks and asked everyone to keep the people in Lee County in their thoughts and prayers.
